Every industry has its own language and terms. These words and phrases can be confusing to anyone who is not part of the daily operations of a specific sector, and the wedding event planning business is no exception.

To help you understand the terms, acronyms, and phrases regularly used when planning your big day, Opulent Event Designs has created this handy reference guide. Here, you’ll find valuable information to help you comprehend and communicate your wedding event needs effectively.

Backdrop: It’s the setting that’s kept behind where the wedding party will be seated. The backdrop can be created using fabrics, florals, candles, architectural elements, and LED screen panels.

Receiving Table: It’s usually placed in the lobby before guests enter the reception or event area. The receiving table is used to welcome guests and inform them of where they will be sitting. Sometimes the card box and guest book are placed on this table.

Centerpiece: It’s an object placed in the center of the table to bring together the decor in the event space. Most couples choose florals and candles as their centerpieces.

Pedestal: A pedestal is a raised platform anywhere from one foot to about four feet high and is used to hold an urn with a floral arrangement or candles at events.

Eucalyptus: It’s a type of plant used in wedding flowers to add a beautiful smell to the event space or wedding bouquet.

Stage Riser: It’s an elevated platform that the backdrop usually sits on or the head table. Stage risers typically can range in size from eight feet long and extend out to as far as forty feet long.

Stage Covering: Stage covering is a material used to cover the stage risers if the color of the stage riser does not aesthetically meet the needs of the decor selected.

Subfloor: A subfloor is temporary flooring used at venues where a dance floor is not available at the venue. It’s possible to hire a flooring company to come and install this temporary flooring.

Uplighting: Uplighting is lighting that can be positioned facing upwards to create a splash of light in any color at any venue. Another term for uplighting can be perimeter lighting.

Pinspot Lighting: It’s lighting that is projected from the top onto a table or focal point to add more lighting into the space.

Rigging and Trussing: Rigging and Trussing get used when installing ceiling installations at venues. Rigging is when beams get hung from points in the ceiling. Trussing is the type of beams used to put together.
